The Joint Committee on Welfare Reform was created in 1996 (Chapter 351, Acts of 1996). The Committee provided oversight of the Family Investment Program (of the Department of Human Resources) and other welfare benefits and services, including food stamps, housing, and medical assistance. The Committee studied issues related to State welfare programs; evaluated welfare demonstration projects; and sought to initiate additional such projects.
To assist the Committee, the Secretary of Human Resources (with the Secretary of Housing and Community Development, and the Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene) annually reported on welfare benefits and services; the status of welfare demonstration projects; and plans to initiate additional projects.
The Committee was abolished in June 2014 (Chapter 464, Acts of 2014).
